Make It Worthy recently held a lively Juneteenth celebration to honor an important moment in American history. The event brought our community together to celebrate freedom, and equality, emphasizing the significance of education, unity, and progress within our community.

Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, marks June 19, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and declared the end of slavery. This day came more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, signifying the true beginning of freedom for many African Americans who were still enslaved in the Confederacy's remote areas. Juneteenth has since become a symbol of African American resilience and a reminder of the ongoing struggle for equality and justice.

Both children and adults enjoyed historical reenactments and an engaging storytelling session that explored the importance of Juneteenth. The event also featured educational videos about African American history, heritage, and the contributions of Black Americans to our society.

Students gathered to enjoy pizza, drinks, and root beer floats. They took part in meaningful discussions and participated in various activities such as quizzes, in which they were rewarded with candies. They also engaged in drawings and paintings, adding an artistic flair to our Juneteenth celebration and making the event even more entertaining.

Message from the Executive Director, Abdoulie Jarju:

This day reminds us of the progress we have made and the work that still lies ahead. At Make It Worthy, we believe in the power of education to transform lives and build a more equitable future.
