At Make It Worthy, we take pride in recognizing students who exemplify dedication, leadership, and a passion for learning. For January 2025, we are thrilled to celebrate Demba, a first grader, whose enthusiasm for education and natural leadership skills have set a remarkable example for his peers.

From the moment Demba walks into our after-school center, his commitment to learning is evident. After placing his backpack at his designated seat, he instinctively takes the initiative to grab notebooks from our bookshelf and distribute them to his fellow students—an extraordinary act of responsibility and leadership for someone so young. Demba actively participates in our class activities, demonstrating significant improvement in both his reading and math skills.

“Make It Worthy’s Student of the Month program started in December as a way to inspire students to strive for greatness,” said Abdoulie Jarju, Founder and Executive Director of Make It Worthy. “Demba’s dedication to learning and his leadership qualities make him a deserving recipient of this award.” As part of this recognition, Demba was awarded a $25.00 gift card, a token of appreciation for his outstanding efforts.

His mother, Kaddy, who proudly attended the ceremony, expressed her gratitude, stating. “Thank you, Mr. Jarju, Ms. Jo and your team, for the wonderful work you’re doing. This is amazing and will motivate all the kids in the class. Since Demba started attending Make It Worthy’s after-school program, his math and reading skills have improved significantly. Your teaching methods have helped Demba gain a deeper understanding of Math and English which is making a real difference his schoolwork. We truly appreciate your patience and positive attitude. Demba always looks forward to coming to your program. Thank you for creating such a supportive learning environment.”

At Make It Worthy, our mission is clear—we are committed to bridging the gap in educational equity and providing students with the resources and mentorship they need to succeed. While schools and teachers play a vital role, parental involvement is just as crucial. We thank Demba’s parents for their continuous support, as their engagement has been instrumental in his progress.

During the ceremony, Joelta Seneh, Co-founder and Development Director of Make It Worthy, encouraged all students to stay motivated, saying: “Demba, I thank you for always showing initiative, cleaning up, picking up people's notebook and handing it out even if I don't ask..when I say it's time to clean up, Demba is always cleaning up...congratulations, Demba, you deserve it!"

Lizzy Kiley, who volunteers her time as a teacher also added, "I think it shows a lot that he is getting recognized right now and he is still working in his notebook...you are always very respectful and kind to others and the adults and I am really proud of you!"

Demba’s achievement serves as an inspiration to his peers and a reminder of the power of dedication, parental support, and a nurturing learning environment. Congratulations, Demba! We are incredibly proud of you and excited to see all that you will accomplish in the future!
