Students at Make It Worthy experienced a powerful and uplifting evening on November 17th when Will Johnson, Snohomish County’s Chief Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer, visited the organization’s tutoring and mentorship program. Johnson, widely respected across the region for his longstanding advocacy for youth, education, and community empowerment brought a message that blended authenticity, personal reflection, and practical advice for future success.
With a professional background rooted in service and years of collaboration with Snohomish County Schools, Johnson has built a reputation as a leader who understands the challenges students face both inside and outside the classroom. His visit to Make It Worthy offered students a rare opportunity to hear firsthand from someone who has overcome obstacles and carved a meaningful path into public leadership.
Speaking openly about his own journey, Johnson walked students through his childhood experiences, the barriers he encountered, and the decisions that shaped his career. His message was clear: education matters and staying focused on school can change the trajectory of a young person’s life.
“Every choice you make now builds the foundation for your future,” Johnson told students. He emphasized that showing up, working hard, and believing in oneself are essential ingredients to success. Many students listened closely as Johnson described how discipline and determination helped him move from uncertainty to leadership and advocacy roles serving thousands of families across Snohomish County.
Throughout the conversation, Johnson repeatedly underscored the importance of curiosity. He encouraged students to ask questions, seek understanding, and never shy away from wanting to know more. “Questions lead to knowledge, and knowledge opens doors,” he said, urging students to always stay engaged and connected with mentors, teachers, and community leaders.
He also highlighted the power of building strong relationships explaining that connections, guidance, and community support can often be the catalyst that helps a young person navigate challenges and access opportunities.
Johnson’s advice extended beyond schoolwork. He spoke directly to students about the importance of saving money, making wise financial decisions, and thinking about their long-term goals. He noted that financial literacy is just as important as academic readiness, especially for students preparing for college and beyond.
He tied these lessons back to academic performance, reminding students that good grades and dedication could one day earn them scholarships or other educational opportunities. His message was one of empowerment: students have the ability to shape their future by the choices they make today.
Make It Worthy Founder and Executive Director Abdoulie Jarju expressed deep appreciation for Johnson’s visit and the impact it had on the students. Jarju emphasized that hearing real stories from real leaders is essential to inspiring young people, especially those who come from backgrounds where mentorship and opportunity are not always readily accessible.
“Our mission is to bring leaders into our community who can help guide our students toward success,” Jarju said. “When young people hear directly about both the successes and the challenges leaders have faced, they begin to understand that their own dreams are possible. This is the kind of experience that strengthens their K–12 journey and sets them on a path to long-term achievement.”
Co-Founder and Development Director Joelta Seneh also shared heartfelt thanks, noting how important it is for students to see community leaders invest time in them. “We need to come together as a society to provide mentorship to these students,” Seneh said. “They need support, encouragement, and role models who believe in them. Will Johnson gave them that today.”
Johnson’s visit to Make It Worthy reinforced the organization’s commitment to academic support, mentorship, and empowerment for students of color, Indigenous students, and students from marginalized communities. His message rooted in perseverance, curiosity, connection, and responsible decision-making offered students guidance they can carry throughout their educational journey.
Make It Worthy extends its sincere gratitude to Will Johnson for his time, wisdom, and dedication. His presence made a meaningful difference, and his words will continue to inspire the next generation of learners and leaders.
